What one factor is influencing your next promotion?

Leaders perceived to have the highest levels of executive presence frequently top the shortlists and make it into the C-suite.

You notice I say ‘are perceived’ because determining executive presence is not an exact science – although behavioural science assessments can provide some excellent data points.

I believe the term executive presence has also become a bit of a catch-all phrase. There is a reasonable argument to say that companies apply a disproportionate weighting to it in selecting leaders for new jobs and promotions.

So, what does it mean to have executive presence, and why does it hold such sway?

◾️At its core, executive presence combines confidence, charisma, authenticity, and gravitas that inspire trust and commands attention.

◾️It’s about projecting an aura of credibility, competence, and composure, even in high-pressure situations.

◾️But if you’re falling short in this area, the first step in developing your executive presence starts with understanding how others perceive you. What impact does your leadership identity have on those around you?

Every interaction is an opportunity to demonstrate your executive presence and reinforce influence.

And remember, businesses make some of the most important decisions about you when you’re not in the room, so make sure your executive presence speaks volumes even in your absence.
